Why It’s Time to Switch RPA Platforms?

  • April 28, 2023

Every software requires updates from time to time. Automation platforms are no different. Leading RPA Platforms have time and again brought to their customers exciting upgrades of their cloud-native and web-based solutions. The latest versions deliver greater and the most anticipated benefits, enlarging the scope of functionalities than its predecessor. Above all, the upgraded versions are designed to eliminate the burden of heavy maintenance as well as additional costs, paving the way for wider & more effective adoption & implementation, theoretically at least.

However, in practice, the process of upgrading to a newer version is nothing less than a challenge. In fact, in the most recent times, multiple such challenging upgrades have befallen the tech community.

Innovation

Recent analyst reports indicate that UiPath is leading the way in innovation and adoption within the automation market.  Reports by both Forrester and Gartner rank the company highest in both its ability to execute as well as its overall vision. Other platforms have been lagging in innovation and execution.

Considering An Upgrade

Some platforms have recently released newer cloud native versions of their product and the legacy product is no longer going to be supported. This is forcing some customers to upgrade. Upgrades can always be a challenge and filled with unknowns. It is often difficult to gauge the efforts solely based on the documentation and information provided by the vendor. It is advisable for companies considering an upgrade to consult with industry peers to understand the issues. A multi-product firm like Dubotz can advise you on the efforts and even facilitate conversations with its customers who have endured an upgrade.

Almost A Rewrite

Customers who have recently upgraded their Automation Platform to the new cloud native platform due to the impending end of support of the existing platform version report tremendous efforts expended on the migration. Some describe the effort as equal to being a rewrite. Speaking in retrospect they often regret not spending the same energies in moving to a platform that is leading the innovation in the industry.

Upgrade Issues

The most common issues that have arisen during upgrades are:

  • Code Parity: Issues concerning code parity between the existing and upgraded versions of the platforms have been reported in multiple instances, as certain activities, variables, and commands from the preceding version are not supported in the new versions.
  • Credentials: Problems in correctly transferring system credentials from the existing version to the upgraded one have also been seen. When system credentials are not properly transferred, heavy user management efforts are required to resolve the issue.
  • Versioning: Certain upgrades made bots that ran on historical versions inaccessible.
  • Audit Logs: Several users have faced issues in retrieving audit log information after completing the migration to the upgraded versions.
